Membership Requirements

Membership eligibility in the American Legion is based on your honorable service with the U.S. Armed Forces at any time since:

  • December 7, 1941.

Because eligibility dates remain open, all current members of the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible to join the American Legion until the date of the cessation of hostilities as determined by the United States government. To qualify, you must have served at least one day of active military duty after December 7, 1941, and have been honorably discharged, or if you are still presently serving honorably.

Important: EVERYONE MUST SUBMIT A COPY OF A DD 214 OR A DISCHARGE CERTIFICATE. SUBMIT A COPY OF YOUR CURRENT MILITARY ID CARD IF YOU ARE AN ACTIVE DUTY SERVICE MEMBER.

NEW MEMBERSHIP

Eligible veterans applying for first-time membership must provide the following:

  1. Complete the American Legion Membership application, which can be obtained by contacting Steve Print for two (2) completed copies. Keep one copy for your records. Applications are also available at the post.
  2. If you cannot find a copy of your DD214, click on this link: COPY OF DD214 DISCHARGE for a DD214 Discharge Application.
  3. Membership dues payment. Current dues are $45.00. Make checks payable to American Legion Post 473. DO NOT SEND CASH.

TRANSFERS

Veterans applying for transfers from their current American Legion Post to our post must submit the following:

  1. a. Completed new updated application form with current address and membership number. b. Copy of DD214. c. Dues payment of $45.00.
  2. Your last issued American Legion membership card.

Keep one copy for your records. Do not send the original copy of your DD214 as it will not be returned. Mail or bring the other copy to the post address together with your dues payment. If the information is correct, your membership will be approved, and a membership card will be mailed to you.
